Customer Clamors for Higher Torque Rotary Head on 3100 Series Rigs

Seeking an efficient truck-rig solution for road borings, Duane Reichel, owner of Soils & Engineering Services in Wisconsin, found the solution when he learned of the higher torque rotary head option now available on the 3100GT.

“The new head was a big factor in our decision because it has 50 percent more torque than our 7822DT, and therefore we can use the 3100GT for drilling jobs with deeper holes,” Reichel said. “We also like the fact that the 3100GT is mounted on a 4X4 chassis and there is only one engine to maintain.”

Soils & Engineering Services currently utilizes their 7822DT for much of their geotechnical work with hollow-stem augers and some bedrock coring as well as their environmental sampling projects. Reichel sought a truck rig with similar or better capabilities for both geotechnical and environmental sampling.

The new GR6.5 rotary head provides 6,800 ft-lbs of torque without sacrificing top end speed of 720 rpm. Engineers also added an additional intermediate-speed range, which further enhances the unit’s wet and air rotary capabilities.

“We’ll be able to use this rig for setting monitoring wells to depth with 4.25-inch ID hollow-stem augers that the 7822DT can’t,” Reichel said. “Our other rigs have over 10,000 foot-pounds of torque but they do not have the direct-push capability like the 7822DT and 3100GT. This rig will allow us to complete more projects with only one rig.”

The smaller size means the 3100GT will fit in their garage, which will be nice during Wisconsin winters, and adds the advantage of not requiring a class A/B CDL.

“We have a larger truck-mount rig we use for highway work, but it requires a driver with a CDL and it’s more machine than what is needed for road borings,” Reichel said. “With the 3100GT mounted on a 4X4 truck chassis we have more versatility for our roadway jobs as well as off-road work where we don’t need a balloon tire or track-mounted rig. Some of our work is in urban areas where using one truck rig versus a truck & trailer with a rig will be more efficient for us.”
