Ask any sonic driller where casing fails, and you'll hear the same answer: the weld between the end joint and the mid tube. Geoprobe® 3.5 GPS sonic casing doesn't have one.
Instead of welding joints to a mid tube, the 3.5 GPS casing is manufactured with upset forged ends — a one-piece construction that removes the weld entirely. The forging process thickens the cross section at the tool joint, putting material exactly where the stress concentrates while keeping the mid tube thinner.
"When dealing with sonic tooling, the common failure point is where the end joint is welded to the mid tube. We were able to eliminate that failure point on the 3.5 GPS sonic casing," Jed Davis, tooling engineer, said. "Ultimately this makes for a stronger, more durable casing."
The result is casing that stands up to the vibration and stress sonic drilling puts on tooling — lasting longer in the field, with less downtime and lower replacement cost.
