Seismic Cone Penetration Testing (SCPT) from Geoprobe® provides a rapid and cost effective method for directly measuring the shear wave velocity of soil.

SCPT shear wave velocity measurements are used to evaluate the liquefaction risk, earthquake generated ground-surface movements, foundations for vibrating equipment, behavior of offshore structures due to wave loading.

Additionally, changes to international building code require more ground motion hazard analysis and it’s more convenient to use seismic cone penetration to measure shear wave response in the upper 100 feet.

CPT coupled with Seismic CPT gives details on soil types, engineering parameters, and shear wave velocity in the same test hole. The seismic CPT module is an add-on to our traditional CPT system so the seismic and CPT data is generated on the same push.

The Geoprobe® SCPT module offers several benefits for companies and field crews. It is easy to use and cost effective as it can be added on to current NOVA CPT systems.

The seismic module remains attached to the 10 or 15 cm2 NOVA CPT cone for seismic CPT projects or can be replaced with a conventional cable adapter or acoustic signal adapter for conventional, non-seismic, projects or wireless CPT operations. This system generates exceptionally clear, low noise, shear wave signals, requiring minimal post log filtering during data analysis. The system uses the standard light, flexible 1/4-inch Geoprobe® CPT cable — appreciated by field operators for its convenience — eliminating upsizing to a more costly, larger diameter, cable and the hassle of restringing your rods when switching between CPT methods.

Data is collected using the intuitive Geoprobe® Seismic Acquisition software which requires minimal training. It allows for quick acquisition of seismic waves displayed in entirety as the cone is advanced to depth, with the capability for signal stacking in high ambient noise locations. Shear waves can be analyzed using the FREE Geoprobe® DI Viewer software, picking wave arrival times using three separate automated methods and generating seismic velocity reports.

Beyond the tooling, the customer service provided by the Geoprobe® team of CPT experts stands out to customers as another advantage. Customers appreciate being able to ask questions and get answers quickly. With more than 20 years experience, Geoprobe® has the technical team to offer CPT troubleshooting, spare parts, service, and repairs — including cone calibration.
